Why did MVLA decide to divide into Trustee Areas?
To protect resources for our students, we chose to go through redistricting after receiving a letter threatening a lawsuit under the California Voting Rights Act alleging racially polarized voting in MVLA elections. Our legal counsel advised that similar elected bodies had spent up to $3 million unsuccessfully defending such lawsuits, while redistricting would cost under $50,000.
